The League of Revolutionary Black Workers emerged in the late 1960s out of the factories and streets of Detroit, where Black workers faced not only the brutality of capitalist exploitation, but the racist structures embedded in both industry and organized labor. Rooted in the militant tradition of Black self-organization, the League fused Marxist-Leninist analysis with the lived experiences of the Black working class, understanding that the factory floor and the urban ghetto were connected battlegrounds in a larger fight against imperialism. Rejecting both reformist unionism and empty nationalist rhetoric, the League built revolutionary cells in auto plants, published radical newspapers, and organized community defense—linking the struggle for workers’ power to the broader fight for Black liberation. Their work exposed the limitations of liberal integration and challenged the labor movement to confront its own complicity in racial capitalism. Though short-lived, the League’s clarity, discipline, and emphasis on political education left behind a blueprint for organizing that remains urgently relevant: that revolution must be built from the bottom, where the contradictions are sharpest and the people are ready to move.
