Langston Hughes (11 x 17 Poster print)
Langston Hughes was a poet of the people whose work gave voice to the struggles, dreams, and dignity of Black life under racial capitalism. Emerging from the Harlem Renaissance, Hughes refused to separate his art from the lived realities of the working class, capturing both the brutalities of oppression and the quiet, everyday beauty of resistance. His verse, stories, and essays were rooted in the rhythms of Black speech and song, carrying within them the memory of the plantation, the factory, and the street corner. Politically committed and globally minded, Hughes traveled widely, drew inspiration from revolutionary movements abroad, and stood firmly against fascism, colonialism, and class exploitation. He saw the fight for Black liberation not as isolated, but tied to broader struggles of workers, peasants, and oppressed peoples everywhere. In placing the culture of the masses at the center of his work, Hughes affirmed that art is not a retreat from struggle, but a weapon within it—a force that stirs consciousness, builds solidarity, and names the world we are trying to transform.

Supporting independent artists cultural workers under capitalism
Making independent art is not without its challenges. It is not cheap, easy, or quick, and it is often not valued in a material sense. However, artists still need to eat and pay rent.
Contemporary art, media and journalistic praxis, and cultural work more broadly are often exploited in building social movements, yet they are often unstable and precarious at best.
This project offers a free library of downloadable zines and other resources, and your support is appreciated! Right now, the project is not yet making enough money to cover the costs of making, printing, and shipping the materials but with your support we'll get there!
