International Workers’ Day, or May Day, stands as a living tribute to the global struggle of the working class against exploitation, colonial plunder, and capitalist domination. Born out of the fierce battles of laborers in the U.S.—particularly the Haymarket martyrs of 1886—it quickly became an international rallying point for workers rising up against the forces that profit from their labor while denying them dignity. Across continents, May Day has been reclaimed by farmworkers, miners, domestic workers, students, and cultural workers alike—not only to demand fair wages or shorter hours, but to assert the right of the oppressed to control the wealth they produce, the land they till, and the futures they imagine. For those fighting under the weight of imperialism and neocolonialism, especially across the African diaspora, May Day is not a ritual but a declaration: that the unity of the working class across borders, identities, and occupations is the beating heart of any genuine movement toward liberation.

Supporting independent artists cultural workers under capitalism

Making independent art is not without its challenges. It is not cheap, easy, or quick, and it is often not valued in a material sense. However, artists still need to eat and pay rent.

Contemporary art, media and journalistic praxis, and cultural work more broadly are often exploited in building social movements, yet they are often unstable and precarious at best.

This project offers a free library of downloadable zines and other resources, and your support is appreciated! Right now, the project is not yet making enough money to cover the costs of making, printing, and shipping the materials but with your support we'll get there!
