Claude McKay was a militant voice of Black rebellion whose poetry, fiction, and political writings gave shape to the rage and resolve of the colonized and working class in the early 20th century. Born in colonial Jamaica and later active in the U.S. and internationally, McKay exposed the brutalities of empire, white supremacy, and class domination with a sharp, unflinching clarity. His work—especially during the Harlem Renaissance—refused respectability and instead embraced the dignity of those in struggle, from Black sharecroppers to anti-colonial rebels. A committed socialist, McKay traveled to the Soviet Union, engaged with Communist movements, and never stopped wrestling with the question of how art could serve revolution. His novel Home to Harlem and his poem “If We Must Die” remain enduring testaments to the spirit of resistance. For McKay, language was a weapon, culture a battlefield, and solidarity the path forward—not only for Black liberation, but for the emancipation of the oppressed across the globe.
